The social history of the Fairholme property is rich in detail. Fairholme was first created as a "summer cottage" for Fairman Rogers of Philadelphia, a wealthy arts patron and engineer. Twenty years later, the Drexel family, purchased the property and promptly enlarged and updated it, adding the Trumbauer ballroom and tower and otherwise modernizing the interior. Fairholme became the setting for lavish Newport entertaining, attended by friends and neighbors such as the Vanderbilts, the Astors, the Van Beurens, and the Belmonts. Later, the estate was acquired by the Count and Countess Alphonso Villa, followed by industrialist railroad magnate Robert Young, whose wife Anita was the sister of artist Georgia O'Keefe. The Duke and Duchess of Windsor were close friends of the Youngs and were frequent guests at the estate during their tenure there, as was Jack Kennedy, who often made use of the swimming pool.

America It Is Time To Fight To Save America's Treasures And Preserve America

The the Edison and Ford Winter Estates in Fort Myers, Florida is located along the Caloosahatchee River. The Estates was awarded the 2009 National Trust for Historic Preservation Award and is an official project of “Save America’s Treasures” at the National Trust for Historic Preservation, a Florida Historic Landmark and a National Register Historic Site. The architecture and furnishings of these gracious, buildings are reminiscent of a bygone era. However there are many innovations which we do not have in the most modern of homes. In the early 1900s, Edison built one of Florida's first modern swimming pools with cement from his own Edison Portland Cement Company. Edison used the water from an artesian well to fill the pool and irrigate the botanical gardens and it still holds water today.

The close friendship between Thomas Edison and Henry Ford brought the Ford's to Fort Myers in 1915 as guests in the Edison's home. The following year, Mr. Ford purchased the house next door to his good friend Thomas Edison. For years, the Fords came to their home in Fort Myers every winter to spend time with the Edisons. They shared their families homes, friends and well known guests such as Harvey Firestone and John Burroughs. On the Estate is an artifact museum, dedicated by Charles Edison, son of the inventor. The museum was built to preserve and house memorabilia related to Thomas Edison's life. One of the many educational displays in the museum is Edison's unique Model T Ford, a prototype model presented to Edison by his friend, Henry Ford. "Mangoes," the Ford's home was purchased by the City of Fort Myers in 1988 and was opened for public tours in 1990. In 1947 Mina Edison, wife of the legendary inventor Thomas Edison, donated the estate to the City of Fort Myers and in November of that year, public touring of the estate began. Mina Edison enjoyed entertaining throughout the gardens of her Florida Estate. She was a gracious hostess and interested in the well being of children and the community following in this tradition, Etiquette at the Estates, is a series of lessons offered today at the Estate.

Santa Monica Seafood is owned by the Cigliano’s, a family tracing its California roots back to the end of the 19th century. John Deluca, arrived from Naples, Italy in 1898, and settled in San Pedro where he started life there as a fisherman. John's oldest son, Jack, began assisting his father in the family business at age nine, and by sixteen, he owned his own fishing boat. He left fishing five years later to start a new venture, a wholesale fish business called State Fish. Jack started this company with his friend Gerald Cigliano, who would later become his brother-in-law and the grandfather of the current generation of Cigliano’s running the Company.

The families first location was on the Santa Monica Pier, where they sold shark, halibut, tuna, white sea bass, sardines, anchovies, live lobsters and the "catch of the day" to the hungry tourists visiting the pier. The city of Santa Monica asked the family to move in the late 1960’s, due to increase vehicular traffic on the pier. In 1969, the Company relocated twelve blocks east to the corner of Colorado Boulevard and 12th Street, which served as its principle processing facility and corporate headquarter until April, 2003. .

As each child reached adulthood and stepped forward to join the business, a new opportunity presented itself to expand the Company. This led to the construction and opening of a second distribution and processing center in Orange County in 1985 with a state of the art complex in Rancho Domingues, which houses their entire wholesale staff, the corporate and sales offices as well as a commissary which prepares soup, special salads, and signature recipe menu items sold in the Company’s retail stores. In 1997, the Company opened its first retail-only site in Costa Mesa. This store combined an extensive display of seafood with a full kitchen in which hot meals are prepared for patio eating or take-out.

The Cigliano’s have carried on the tradition of their great Uncles Jack & Frank which has assured their continued success: hard work, business savvy, and a strong philosophy. London based Danish designer Nina Tolstrup of Studiomama wanted a weekend retreat to escape life in so she bought a small plot of land on the shore in a seaside town located in northeast Kent. The 388-square-foot structure is located in the middle of a row of 25 tiny cottages, sits on galvanized steel stilts, and is clad with cedar shingles. The interior is sawn softwood and the focus is the sea view. A sleeping loft accommodates Ms. Tolstrup and her husband, and her two children who sleep in bunks. The beach house has nine bedrooms, a flower room, scullery, wine cellar, sewing room, nanny wing, mother-in-law's house and gardener's cottage. The home also has regency-style windows, airy rooms with wooden floors and is decorated in a beachcomber style with fresh paint colors, informal furnishings and an open fireplaces. A vaulted ceiling dining room, looks out on a traditional English style cobbled courtyard, with a gently trickling fountain.
